General

Power searching is one of the search options available in both Leap and Client. It uses Common Command Language (CCL) to build a query. The query is made up of one or more search expressions, and these search expressions are made up of access points, operators and search strings.

Access Point: field you want to search by

Operators: link different components together

Search strings: values to search for

Example Power Search:

(AB=1) AND (COL=15)

Access Points: AB (assigned branch) and COL (collection)

Operators:  = (combines the access point with the search terms/values) and AND (links the different search expressions)

Search strings: 1 (Pinnacle) and 15 (Adult Fiction)

This search will look for items assigned to Pinnacle within the Adult Fiction Collection.

Additional Resources for Learning How to Power Search

There are two documents to use when executing a power search. The first is a document with all of the Access Points for a power search. The second is the Polaris Codes document which will identify the search string values. Learn more about creating power searches in the previously recorded workshop on Scoping and Power Searches.

Create and Save a Power Search in the Find Tool

There is no need to understand CCL to build a power search. By using the Find Tool in coordination with filters, a query can be created that can be converted to a power search.

1. In the Find Tool, click on the funnel icon to open filters.

2. Add the desired filters to your search.

3. Change from a basic search to a power search.

4. Your query now is a power search.

5. From there, you can click on the Save icon to save your power search.
